Church history, a protected natural monument and a circular hiking trail reveal different sides of Königsheim. In the village centre stands the church dedicated to Saint Agatha; the Peace Linden is located by the church on Kirchgasse. St. Anthony’s Chapel sits on a hill above the village. Also nearby is the approximately 7.6 km Fauden Circular Trail, which starts and ends at the town hall. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Königsheim can plan their stay around local history and a specific walking route.

Village history between church and chapel

St. Agatha’s Church was built in 1837, replacing an earlier church dedicated to Agatha on what is now the church meadow. That older church was consecrated in 1448. The two dates mark different milestones: 1448 refers to the consecration of the former church building, while 1837 is the year the present church in the village centre was built.

The Peace Linden stands by the church on Kirchgasse. It is one of three natural monuments in the Königsheim district protected by the nature conservation authority. This brings together a church-history landmark and an explicitly protected natural monument in the village. St. Anthony’s Chapel adds another perspective: it is situated on a hill above the village, and construction began in 1898 at the suggestion of Gregor Wäschle, the parish priest of Königsheim at the time. It is important to distinguish the dates: 1898 marks the start of construction of the chapel, while 1837 is the year St. Agatha’s Church was built.

A walk around the area

The Fauden Circular Trail is approximately 7.6 km long and starts and ends at Königsheim Town Hall. Starting and finishing in the same place gives the route a clear framework for planning your day. You can make the hike the main focus of your visit and treat it separately from the local architectural and natural features. Its approximate length provides a concrete guide to the extent of the circuit. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether the hike should shape your stay or remain a single activity.

In the wider destination of Tuttlingen

Tuttlingen district covers 734.4 square kilometres, encompassing the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Alb, parts of the Baar region and the valley of the young Danube. In the northern part of the district are juniper heaths and the 10-Thousanders region, with ten mountains over 1,000 metres high. The Danube gorge and the Höwenegg volcanic crater are also among the district’s scenic highlights; white limestone cliffs rise above the Danube Valley. The wider destination of Tuttlingen therefore brings together varied landscapes: juniper heaths and mountains in the north, cliffs in the Danube Valley and a volcanic crater.

The Danube Sinkhole between Immendingen, Möhringen, Tuttlingen and Fridingen can look different from day to day: in some places, the Danube carries a lot of water; in others, the riverbed is completely dry or carries only a little water. The DonauWellen premium hiking trail “Donauversinkung” runs between Tuttlingen-Möhringen and Immendingen; check current trail conditions before setting out. At Rabenfels in the Bära Valley, the climbing areas between the “Mister Wendl” and “Gebrüderweg” routes are open from 1 August to 31 December. Check the applicable regulations before climbing.

Cultural attractions offer a variety of highlights, too. The Neuhausen ob Eck Open-Air Museum displays 25 historic buildings that were dismantled at their original locations, moved there and restored to their original condition. The upper floors of the Künstlerhaus Scharf Eck in Fridingen house a museum about Hans Bucher, the painter of the Danube Valley; his life and work are presented across three floors. The Museum Oberes Donautal in Ifflinger Castle complements its changing special exhibitions with permanent exhibitions on the history of the town and its rulers, archaeology, carnival and more recent history.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a holiday apartment in Königsheim, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: would you like to include a hike of about 7.6 km in your visit, or are you more interested in the history of St. Agatha’s Church and the Peace Linden natural monument? If you would also like to explore the wider area’s landscapes and cultural attractions, the broader destination of Tuttlingen offers a regional perspective of its own.
