The Klippeneck plateau gives Denkingen a distinctive landscape feature: it lies on the edge of the Swabian Alb between Tuttlingen and Rottweil, within the municipal area of Denkingen, and drops steeply into the valley to the west. If you want hiking and the hillside edge to shape your holiday, this local setting offers a concrete starting point for planning. At Klippeneck, named hiking trails meet places to rest and a shelter; the wave-shaped lounger on the hillside edge offers an impressive view.

The Klippeneck plateau and its trails

The Donauberglandweg, the Albsteig Schwäbische Alb, the DonauWellen Premium Trail Klippeneck-Steig, and other local circular hiking trails in the municipality of Denkingen pass by Klippeneck. The routes of HW 1 and HW 3 are also important for orientation: in Denkingen, HW 3 follows HW 1 across Klippeneck and continues towards Dreifaltigkeitsberg. This makes it possible to plan a hiking-focused visit using specific trail names and a stated direction. Check the latest route information before setting out.

The Kreuzsteige rest and barbecue area is located on the heights of Klippeneck in Denkingen, alongside the main hiking trails HW 1 and HW 3. It was originally established by the municipality of Denkingen. In 2017, the Denkingen branch of the Albverein built the “Kreuzsteighütte” shelter at Kreuzsteige. A wave-shaped lounger was added on the hillside edge in 2019: the Denkingen branch of the Albverein installed it there, where visitors can enjoy an impressive view. On the Klippeneck plateau, the municipality of Denkingen erected a panoramic information board in 2010 with funding support, near the hikers’ car park and at the starting point of many hiking trails.

Local history at the fountain and monument

Away from the hiking trails, the fountain and GEO monument offer concrete points of reference for Denkingen’s history. The Albverein Fountain stands on the main road through the village and was installed in 1996 with support from the municipality and the company SchwerPräzision. The GEO monument is on the hillside edge by the Klippeneck hikers’ car park. The municipality of Denkingen erected it in 2018 to mark the municipality’s 1,200th anniversary. The two dates refer to different local details: the contributors are named for the fountain, while the monument’s date marks the occasion for its erection.

Tuttlingen as the wider travel destination

The wider travel destination of Tuttlingen encompasses a broader landscape. Covering 734.4 square kilometres, Tuttlingen District includes the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Alb, parts of the Baar region, and the valley of the Young Danube. The northern part of the district is home to juniper heaths and the 10-Tausender region, with ten mountains over 1,000 metres high. The Danube Gorge and the Höwenegg volcanic crater are among the district’s scenic highlights; white limestone cliffs rise above the Danube Valley. These regional landscape themes add further facets of the wider travel destination to the view of the Klippeneck plateau.
