The Leimbach Route passes through Oftersheim, the Oftersheim Dunes lie to the southeast of the town, and archaeological finds point to a Roman past. These different points of interest can help you choose the focus of your trip: a longer cycling route, landscapes or history. Looking at other places in the Rhine-Neckar district can also help with your planning.

Cycling along the Leimbach Route

The 46-kilometre Leimbach Route runs from Sinsheim in the Kraichgau region via Wiesloch, Leimen, Oftersheim and Schwetzingen to Brühl on the Rhine. It is well signposted and invites cyclists to discover the Leimbach and special places along the way. Oftersheim is therefore one section of a route that extends far beyond the town. If you plan your trip around this route, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the section through Oftersheim or on the entire connection between the Kraichgau and the Rhine. Before setting out, it is worth checking the current route conditions.

Dune landscapes and local history

A distinctive landscape lies southeast of Oftersheim: the Oftersheim Dunes nature and landscape conservation area. This protected landscape offers a different focus from the cycling route. In the wider region, Oftersheim is also one of the municipalities involved in the Schwetzinger Hardt. There, nature conservation, recreational use and sustainable forestry are to be promoted and developed in harmony. These topics offer additional perspectives if you would also like to consider the landscape and its preservation when planning your trip.

The town’s history offers another point of interest. In the 1960s, the remains of a Roman villa (villa rustica) were excavated in the Hornungsäcker area of Oftersheim. This adds a historical layer to the landscape and cycling. If you would like to bring together different interests, you can treat these topics as separate focuses for your trip rather than equating them with a single excursion destination.

More perspectives in the Rhine-Neckar district

The wider Rhine-Neckar district offers other interests of a different kind. The Electoral Palatinate’s Schwetzingen Palace has a Rococo theatre and a world-famous park. In Ladenburg, large parts of the historic town centre still reflect the Middle Ages and, in some places, the Roman period. Asparagus has been grown in Schwetzingen for around 350 years. The Hockenheimring in Hockenheim is a popular attraction for motorsport fans. Weinheim’s Waidsee has areas for paddlers, sailors and windsurfers; at the swimming lake in St. Leon, water skiing and wakeboarding are available on a cable tow. The Rhine-Neckar district thus offers culture, regional cuisine, motorsport and water sports as different travel interests.
