Palace Park and Nature by the Water

The old town centre of Neckarhausen is home to the palace park, which covers around three hectares. Its diverse tree population, meadow valleys and sightlines create a variety of impressions, while free admission means you can visit without paying an entrance fee. For many years, the park has also been home to hundreds of Alexandrine parakeets. If you keep an eye out for the birds, you can encounter a distinctive part of the local wildlife alongside the park’s landscaped features.

The fish nursery between Edingen and Neckarhausen offers a different perspective on life by the river. This side channel of the Neckar, which covers around 13,000 square metres, serves as a breeding and refuge area for fish; at the same time, it gives the public attractive access to the water. A riverside path and viewing platforms invite visitors to observe nature. There is also an outdoor classroom by the river, with a sun canopy and tiered seating, intended for schools and young anglers.

Edinger Ried reveals another side of the municipality’s landscape. The Rhine floodplains include marshland, deciduous woodland, ponds, small lakes and an old branch of the Rhine. Wide walking paths run along the Rhine dikes. The Ried thus brings together different types of nature in one area, while the paths along the dikes offer a way to explore the landscape on foot.

Palace History and Culture

Neckarhausen Palace originated as a Thurn und Taxis post house, which had existed in Neckarhausen since at least 1634. An ice cellar in the palace park recalls an earlier method of refrigeration: in winter, blocks of ice cut from the frozen Neckar were stored there. The park and palace therefore represent not only greenery and recreation, but also the town’s connection to the river and its history.

The estate also includes the orangery, which was fully restored in 2008 and is available for cultural events. The Gemeindemuseum Interest Group supports the municipality of Edingen-Neckarhausen in establishing and operating the municipal museum. It also promotes art, culture, exhibitions and the preservation of cultural heritage. If you like to include cultural experiences in your trip, you will find a range of options here, from the historic palace grounds to museum work.

In Edingen-Neckarhausen, the Neckar and its floodplain are used for paddling, fishing and recreation. Riverside walks make the river a defining feature even for a more leisurely stay. The Neckarhausen ferry provides a crossing over the Neckar to Ladenburg. A railway bridge also connects the two towns and can be used by cyclists and pedestrians. This gives you a choice of ways to get to the other side of the Neckar, depending on whether you want to travel on foot, by bike or by ferry.

The Edingen-Neckarhausen leisure pool adds a range of water and swimming facilities to the area’s nature and cultural attractions.
