Neckargemünd combines an Old Town that is more than 1,000 years old with themed trails, hiking routes and historic Dilsberg. This is especially clear from the trails, each of which explores its own theme.

Old Town history and culture

Neckargemünd’s Old Town is home to well-preserved half-timbered houses, some of which date back to the 16th century. Another glimpse into the town’s history can be found in a building that was first used as a Lutheran church and later served as the town hall until 1984. Today, it houses the museum and public library. On a stroll through the Old Town, you can therefore include both historic architecture and present-day cultural institutions in your explorations.

The Dilsberg district also has its own historical character: the medieval hilltop fortress of Dilsberg is considered the district’s historic origin. The site includes an underground well shaft about 80 metres long. From the stair tower in the ruins of the fortress, you can enjoy views over the Neckar Valley and the Odenwald. History and landscape come together here in a striking location; the shaft and the views offer different ways to explore the past and the surrounding area.

Themed trails for exploring together

The Sinnenpfad appeals to adults and children with more than 17 interactive stations. It is easily accessible with a pushchair and is about 2.5 kilometres long. The route runs from the hiking car park in Neckargemünd to the district of Waldhilsbach. If you are looking for a manageable distance and activities to take part in, this trail offers a focused outing for your stay.

The “Hochwasserpfad” (Flood Trail) explores a different subject: since 2014, ten information boards have explained the natural phenomenon of flooding. The route runs for about 2.5 kilometres along the Neckar and Elsenz rivers. The Neckargemünd Cultural Association (Kulturverein Neckargemünd e.V.) organises guided tours of the Flood Trail three to four times a year. If you would rather learn about the subject on a guided tour, you can plan around these dates; the Tourist Information Centre also offers themed tours for groups in several languages, on dates of your choice.

Hiking and cycling

For a longer hike, the second stage of the Neckarsteig connects Neckargemünd and Neckarsteinach. It is classified as a moderate hike covering 9 kilometres. This rating and distance help you decide whether the stage suits your hiking plans, without confusing it with the shorter Sinnenpfad.

Cyclists can also choose a clearly described stage: the Neckartal Cycle Route follows the Neckar for 62.5 kilometres from Neckargemünd to Mosbach. This gives you a choice of different activities and distances when planning your holiday. Getting here and finding your way around

Neckargemünd Altstadt stop can be reached from Heidelberg Central Station by S-Bahn on the Neckar Valley Railway. Bus route 753 also runs from Neckargemünd station to the “Dilsberg, Vor dem Tor” stop. These details can help you plan your journey and your connection to Dilsberg, without having to rely on a car for your outings.
