Discover Hilsbach: Eichelberg, Wine Landscape and History
Accommodation in Hilsbach
Hilsbach combines a historic townscape with the “Hilsbacher Eichelberg” adventure trail. Those looking for a blend of landscape, views, and local history during their stay will find various starting points here for planning their own day.
Experience Eichelberg on a manageable route
The “Hilsbacher Eichelberg” adventure trail begins in Hilsbach at the Sportzentrum/Waldsee car park on Breite Straße. The route is approximately five kilometres long and includes 20 stations providing interesting information about Eichelberg and its surroundings. It follows developed forest and field paths without any significant climbs.
The trail passes through a vineyard area where wine has been grown since the Middle Ages. Viticulture is therefore not only part of the Eichelberg landscape, but also points to a long history of land use. At the viewing platform, the view opens out across the surrounding Kraichgau landscape. In good weather, the view extends over the vineyards as far as Heilbronn and the Palatinate Forest on the horizon; Steinsberg Castle rises to the east.
Hilltop Fortification and Landscape History
The plateau of Eichelberg covers 19 hectares and is one of the few prehistoric hilltop fortifications in northern Baden. This aspect adds a historical perspective to the experience of the landscape. If you are travelling with a range of interests, you can therefore use the adventure trail both as an excursion through vineyards and forest and field paths and as an opportunity to explore the older history of Eichelberg.
Historic Townscape with Upper Town and Lower Town
Hilsbach itself also reveals its character as a place shaped by history. The dense development extends across the Upper Town and Lower Town. The Counts of Oettingen relocated the settlement centre to the hill. A new church was built there between 1250 and 1300 and was later dedicated to Saint Michael.
St Michael’s Church also recalls a special shared use: until the construction of the new Catholic church in Hilsbach in 1950/51, it was jointly used by the Protestant and Catholic congregations. Those interested in church and local history can incorporate this historical development into their exploration of Hilsbach. The focus is on both the structure of the town and the history of individual buildings.
Hilsbach as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip
A holiday apartment in Hilsbach is an especially suitable choice if you want to combine experiences of the landscape with historical discoveries. For a day at Eichelberg, the named starting point, the approximately five-kilometre route, the 20 stations, and the viewing platform are important points of reference. If you prefer a different focus, you can explore the Upper Town, Lower Town, and the history of St Michael’s Church.
