Nußloch combines varied landscapes with nature trails, forest and insights into local history. The discovery trail explores how limestone was formed, how it is quarried today and the natural havens created through restoration after quarrying.

A landscape spanning several natural regions

Nußloch lies at the meeting point of the Kraichgau, the Odenwald, the Rhine plain and the Southern Bergstraße. The municipality’s area ranges from 103 to 317 m above sea level, and its varied soils shape a diverse landscape. The municipal forest, covering around 350 hectares, has been managed in a nature-friendly way for several decades. A large part lies within the Bergstraße-Süd Landscape Protection Area and is designated as a Flora-Fauna-Habitat area. Beech trees shape the species-rich forest, alongside oaks, ash, maples, lindens, elms, larches, spruces and Douglas firs. Service trees, wild service trees and walnut trees also grow here, and the ground vegetation includes rare orchids. This diversity gives the forest its own character and makes it an interesting focus for anyone who likes to combine their stay with nature experiences.

Nature trails for different discoveries

The forest nature trail begins at the Weiße Hohl car park. From there, the route follows Wieslocher Weg, Blockhüttenweg, Neuer Weg and Maisbacher Fußweg back to the starting point. Along the way, visitors can learn about numerous tree species and discover interesting facts about Nußloch’s municipal forest. The bird nature trail offers another way to explore the forest. It follows Wieslocher Weg, Amerikanerweg, Tannengartenweg and Neuer Weg back to the starting point. The fruit-tree nature trail has a different focus: it is about three kilometres long and passes through scenic parts of the municipality. Local history and distinctive features

The Nußloch local history museum offers a glimpse into the town’s past through objects on display. It is located at Fahrweg 3, a few minutes’ walk from Lindenplatz. This lets you include an interest in local history in your holiday plans without making your stay all about hiking.

The sweet Honigzwetschge plum has a distinctive local story: it grows in its pure wild form within Nußloch’s municipal area. In the past, the plum was used in a variety of ways, including for baking and cooking, as well as in liquid form. This traditional use adds a culinary aspect of local history to the landscape and forest themes; it refers to how the fruit was used in the past.

Nußloch is also part of the inter-municipal Leimbach Route for leisure and tourism. Besides Nußloch, the participating towns are Sinsheim, Dielheim, Wiesloch, Leimen, Sandhausen, Oftersheim, Schwetzingen, Ketsch and Brühl. The project coordinator is the Heidelberg-Mannheim Municipal Association.
