Salt history and Baroque heritage in Offenau
The history of salt can be experienced at two locations. At the edge of Offenau, heading towards Jagstfeld, stands the salt storehouse built in 1780, a reminder of the town’s salt history. The Count von Westerholt Chapel, built in 1892, is located next to the Saline cultural forum. The parish church of St. Alban on the banks of the Neckar adds another highlight: its interior is an impressive example of Baroque art. Together, these buildings offer different starting points for a tour through the town’s history and architecture.
To discover more of Offenau than its individual buildings, you can follow the Historic Trail. It passes 17 stops covering more than 1,200 years of the former spa town’s history. You can explore the route with a local municipal archivist as your guide. This offers two ways to engage with the town: individual historic and architectural landmarks, or a series of stops tracing a broader arc through its history.
Promenade and the Neckar
For a shorter break in your day, the approximately one-kilometre-long Johann-Michl Promenade is a good option. It is designed to blend with nature and is equipped with benches for sitting and reclining. The promenade is suitable as a rest stop for cyclists or for a short walk. Unlike the Historic Trail, the focus here is not on a sequence of 17 stops, but on a manageable stretch with opportunities to relax.
The Neckar also makes Offenau a place for special activities. One of the few water-skiing courses on an inland waterway in Germany is located here. It runs along the Neckar for about two kilometres downstream to the Gundelsheim lock. This is a distinctive feature of the local Neckar landscape.
Getting here and regional highlights
Offenau station is on the Stuttgart–Heidelberg DB railway line and the Heilbronn–Mosbach S-Bahn line. The platforms are step-free. If you are planning to travel by train, check current connections and accessibility before your journey.
