Jagsthausen

The Jagsthausen Castle Museum displays items from the family collection, Götz von Berlichingen’s iron hand, and Roman finds from the Limes fort and the Roman civilian settlement. In this way, a single museum presents both the town’s history and different aspects of its Roman past. Visitors must arrange an appointment in advance; the museum can currently only be visited this way. Another building with a date of its own is the White Castle, built in 1792.

Roman traces in the town centre and along the trails

The open-air Roman Baths Museum in the town centre displays the floor plan of a Roman military bath dating from around 200 AD. The museum “Constant Companions – Roman Everyday Ceramics from the Krapf Collection” offers a different perspective on Roman daily life: it showcases Roman everyday ceramics and provides insights into Roman life around 200 AD. Visitors interested in antiquity can therefore explore both an example of Roman military architecture and objects from everyday life during their stay.

The history of the Limes is also explored beyond the museums. Benches marked “World Heritage LIMES” stand along three routes in the Jagsthausen municipal area. Their information panels explain conditions on the Roman imperial frontier between 160 and 260 AD. A trail with educational information panels passes a reconstructed Roman well on its way to the fort area and the museum in Götzenburg Castle. A Limes tour of Hohenlohe also starts in Jagsthausen, by the remains of the fort and the open-air Roman Baths Museum.

Circular hikes, nature and cycling

Eight circular hiking trails explore the landscape on both sides of the Jagst within the municipality. The individual trails range from 3.5 to 19 kilometres in length and cover 85 kilometres in total. When choosing a hike, you can start by considering the marked route length. For a different kind of outing, Jagsthausen offers a guided 120-minute nature walk. Stories and legends from the past are part of the experience, along with views of the Jagst Valley.

Jagsthausen is also a useful point of reference for cyclists: the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route runs through the municipality and has been awarded four stars by the ADFC. The German Limes Cycle Route and the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route also cross in Jagsthausen. If your cycling trip focuses on one of these long-distance routes, you can use them to place the town on your itinerary.
