History at the lookout tower, museum and ring rampart
Heuchelberger Warte was built in 1483 by Count Eberhard im Bart and formed part of a 23.5-kilometre-long defensive earthwork. Today, it is a popular destination offering magnificent panoramic views. History and landscape meet here: on the final stretch of the Heuchelberger Wald Adventure Trail, hikers are treated to a panorama of the vineyards on the slopes of Heuchelberg and the surrounding villages.
The permanent exhibition at the “Altes Rathaus” Museum is devoted to archaeological exhibits and finds from the Großgartach culture. Chronological panels and diagrams on dendrochronology and stratigraphy complement the exhibition. Other topics range from water supply in earlier centuries and wastewater management to evidence of local craftsmanship dating from the mid-19th century. Materials on emigration and immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries offer further insights into historical life journeys. The museum thus offers various ways to explore the past, from archaeological finds to changes in everyday life.
The Frankenschanze is another of Leingarten’s historic sites. The oval ring rampart is 84 metres long and 66 metres wide; an information board provides details about the site. Its clearly stated dimensions help visitors picture the rampart’s extent, while the information on site offers a starting point for learning more about it.
Exploring Heuchelberger Wald and the vineyards
The Heuchelberger Wald Adventure Trail starts at Leingarten Mitte S-Bahn station and is 6.3 kilometres long. It leads through the local recreation area to Heuchelberger Warte, where a 2.7-kilometre circular route branches off. A total of 45 interactive stations are designed for children and adults. This makes the trail a practical shared activity, with the stations forming part of the experience alongside the views of the vineyard slopes and surrounding villages on the final stretch.
The “In bio veritas” wine experience tour offers a different kind of outing: it is an easy circular hike through vineyards, taking around five hours. The route runs mostly along paved paths, with gentle ascents and descents and some sections on vineyard steps. It starts and ends at the Weinreuter winery in Leingarten. To get to the tour, you can take the S4 S-Bahn line to Leingarten West and then follow a signposted footpath. The stated duration and described path surface help with planning your day; the vineyard steps and gentle slopes are also part of the route’s character.
Wine and regional cuisine
The wine experience tour includes five distinctive wines and a non-alcoholic option. It also offers a soup, a selection from the Geifertshofen organic dairy and fresh farmhouse bread. If you are considering Leingarten primarily for wine and culinary experiences, this tour brings together a walk through the vineyards and tastings.
Another wine highlight is the Weinkulinaria. Since 2023, Leingarten’s five winegrowers and the town of Leingarten have jointly organised this wine festival. It focuses on regional wines and matching culinary offerings. The Weinkulinaria and the tour thus differ in format: one is a jointly organised wine festival, while the other is a circular hike with tastings.
