Wüstenrot lies at just under 500 metres above sea level in the heart of Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park, between the Lauter and Brettach valleys. The woodland landscape shapes the character of the town and makes it an appealing destination for days when outdoor activities take centre stage. At the same time, there are various ways to include nature experiences, cycling routes and cultural discoveries in your stay.

Hiking trails through woodland and countryside

More than 80 kilometres of marked circular hiking trails pass through Wüstenrot. The hiking network includes 13 marked circular trails, with hikes ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 hours. The trails lead through shady woodland and past fields, meadows and picturesque lakes.

The Dachsi Nature Discovery Trail in Wüstenrot offers a special way to explore nature. Its eleven stations are set along a 2.6-kilometre circular route through meadows and woodland, and alongside the Dachsbach stream and Finsterrot Lake. Along the way, you can observe nature and discover butterflies, dragonflies, bees and the underwater world. You will need sure footing and sturdy shoes for the trail. Some sections are narrow and unpaved, making the route unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs—an important point to bear in mind if you are planning an outing with a pushchair.

Get active: Nordic walking and cycling

Wüstenrot has been a Nordic walking centre of the German Ski Association since June 2007. Twelve routes run through the Wüstenrot woodland and total around 80 kilometres; the routes include up to 300 metres of elevation gain. They are signposted throughout and equipped with heart-rate monitoring stations. Parking is available at every starting point. This information can help you plan if Nordic walking is to be a focus of your holiday.

There is also a clearly described starting point for a cycling tour: the 5-Districts Cycle Tour begins and ends in Wüstenrot and connects five districts. It mostly follows quiet roads, but occasionally uses busier ones. Three long climbs make the tour a challenge even for experienced cyclists. If you are choosing between hiking and cycling, the two options involve different considerations for planning your day.

Discover nature and special places

At Wellingtonienplatz, the giant trees reach almost 45 metres in height and up to 165 centimetres in diameter, measured at a height of 1.5 metres. They are among the tallest and thickest trees in the Löwenstein forestry district. Wellingtonias more than a hundred years old also grow in the forests of Wüstenrot and neighbouring Löwenstein. If you are interested in giant trees and woodland landscapes, you will find a distinctive natural feature of the area here.

Wüstenrot Circular Hiking Trail 3 starts at Wellingtonienplatz and leads through Wüstenrot. The Silberstollen mine is also nearby: it is located about 150 metres beyond the outskirts of Wüstenrot, in the direction of Schmellenhof. Its passages, “Unverhofftes Glück” (127.6 metres) and “Soldatenglück” (34.85 metres), are closed to visitors because of falling rubble and to protect wildlife. The mine is therefore not suitable for an interior visit.

Culture and other experiences

The Building Society Museum displays documents relating to Georg Kropp’s life and work and to the founding of Wüstenrot Building Society. The Glass Museum has a collection of valuable glassware and other objects from early glass production. The two museums offer different subjects to explore during a stay that includes culture as well as nature and outdoor activities.

Other experiences include the high ropes course, the first freestanding high ropes course in Baden-Württemberg. It can only be booked in advance. The Nature Adventure Camp invites residents of Wüstenrot and visitors from elsewhere to enjoy adventurous hours in the diverse natural surroundings of Wüstenrot. The birds of prey centre offers flight demonstrations at 3 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and on weekdays by arrangement. These different activities offer more options if you would like your stay to include more than hiking alone.

Whether you are looking for a holiday apartment for hiking days, a cycling tour or a mix of nature and culture, Wüstenrot brings these interests together with specific trails and experiences. Which accommodation is right for you depends on the activities you want to make the focus of your trip.
