Jewish history and a historic site
At Großlaupheim Castle, the Museum of the History of Christians and Jews explores the relationship between the Christian majority and the Jewish minority in Laupheim. The museum thus connects a historical perspective with a clear link to Laupheim itself. Another point of interest is the Jewish cemetery in the middle of the city, on Judenberg. It contains 1,200 burial plots and 1,000 gravestones. The oldest gravestone is dated 1740; its inscription can now only be deciphered in fragments. The museum and cemetery offer different ways to explore Laupheim’s Jewish history: one through the relationship between the communities, the other through a specific place and a dated gravestone.
Cultural programme and star shows
The Kulturhaus focuses on a wide variety of event formats. In collaboration with external organisers and Laupheim cultural practitioners, it puts together a varied annual programme. Offerings include musicals, concerts, theatre, operetta, ballet, slapstick and comedy. The range extends from music and stage performances to comedy; individual events and dates vary. At the Laupheim Planetarium, multimedia star shows change quarterly. They cover astronomy and space travel, with specific topics changing from quarter to quarter. Park, city walks and LAUSCHTOUR
The 7-hectare castle park in Laupheim features waterways, ponds, ornamental birds and rare trees. Its water, wildlife and trees give the park a character distinct from the city’s cultural and historical themes. For exploring Laupheim on foot, you can choose between a 3.6-kilometre city stroll and an 8.1-kilometre city hike. The hike is more than twice as long as the stroll and offers numerous highlights and views. The routes can therefore be compared by distance.
Another way to explore the city is the GPS-guided, app-based LAUSCHTOUR. Using your own smartphone, it takes you from Großlaupheim Castle to the so-called Judenberg. For the two city walks, distance is a concrete point of comparison; for the LAUSCHTOUR, the GPS guidance and route between the two named places are the main features. This gives you several ways to discover Laupheim on foot.
Culture in the wider Biberach destination
The wider Biberach destination offers further historical perspectives. The Upper Swabian Museum Village of Kürnbach presents six centuries of history and includes more than 30 historic buildings that offer insights into everyday life in times past. Steinhausen Pilgrimage Church provides a different historical perspective: Dominikus Zimmermann and his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann built it between 1728 and 1731. So, in the wider Biberach destination, Laupheim’s urban history is complemented by themes from everyday life and architectural history.
