Langenenslingen: Old Castle, Jünger House and Churches

The Old Castle above Warmtal

The Old Castle is a site covering about two hectares, with terraces created by people and large walls. Archaeologists from the State Office for Heritage Management have definitively attributed it to the Celtic period. Its size and landscaped terraces make the site a tangible starting point for exploring early evidence of human ingenuity.

The Old Castle can be reached from the hiking car park via a signposted footpath. Driving in the forest is strictly prohibited. Plan your route on foot and follow the signs on site.

The Jünger House: Living Spaces, Library and Beetle Collection

The Stauffenberg Forestry House is a Baroque building dating from 1728. The writer Ernst Jünger lived there from 1951 until his death. At the Jünger House, you can visit his living and working rooms, preserved in their original condition, his library and beetle collection, as well as the garden belonging to the house. Another room is dedicated to his brother Friedrich Georg Jünger (1898–1977). For planning purposes, we recommend confirming the current visiting hours before setting out.

Church Art and Architectural History

Three large ceiling paintings by Januarius Zick in St. James’s Church in Dürrenwaldstetten tell the Christmas story. In Langenenslingen, the present-day parish church of St. Conrad stands on the main street by the castle; it was built in the style of 1890. The two churches offer distinct points of interest: in Dürrenwaldstetten, the story depicted in the ceiling paintings takes centre stage, while in Langenenslingen, the focus is on the parish church’s architectural history.

More Cultural Highlights in the Biberach Destination

The Biberach destination also offers a variety of attractions for travellers interested in culture. The Upper Swabian Museum Village of Kürnbach presents six centuries of history. More than 30 historic buildings offer insights into everyday life in times gone by. The Museum of the History of Christians and Jews in Laupheim explores three centuries of life shared by Christian and Jewish residents. The focus is clearly different at each site: Kürnbach centres on everyday life in historic buildings, while Laupheim explores the shared lives of two religious communities over several centuries.

In the monastery’s Baroque convent building in Schussenried, the magnificent library hall is among the most beautiful library halls in southern Germany. The Steinhausen Pilgrimage Church was built from 1728 to 1731 by Dominikus Zimmermann and his brother Johann Baptist Zimmermann. It lies on the Way of St. James, which runs from Nuremberg via Nördlingen, Ulm and Biberach, then continues to Bad Waldsee, Weingarten, Einsiedeln and Le Puy, all the way to Santiago in Spain. The Mönchsrother Path follows another historic trail: it traces the history of the former monastery village, which is presented on 24 information panels.

Nature and science are among the other themes in the Biberach destination. The Wackelwald (Wobbling Forest) is close to the spa gardens on the edge of Bad Buchau and is open to visitors. Multimedia star shows on astronomy and space travel at the planetarium change quarterly. Historic buildings, religious art, nature and science thus offer a range of different interests.
