Culture and history

The Château du Donjon is a small castle made of golden-coloured stone in the style of the Italian Renaissance. It was built in 1873 by the Rittershoffer-Schelimberg family.

The Croix de la Place was erected in 1626 during the reign of Louis XIII. It bears a small depiction of the Virgin Mary and a pelican, symbolising self-sacrifice and paternal love.

The first lords of Saint-Vérand built the feudal Château de la Garde. From 1193 to 1226, it belonged to Renaud de Forez, the Archbishop of Lyon.

The Domaine du château de la Flachère is partly classified as a historic monument and partly listed as a historic monument. It is attributed to the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.

Wine and agriculture

The family-run Domaines Chermette in Saint-Vérand produce Beaujolais wines as well as the Beaujolais crus Brouilly, Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent and Saint-Amour. The wines mature in a vaulted cellar with large oak barrels, which has been preserved in its historic character.

Domaine d’Auménie produces organic wines in the higher elevations of Saint-Vérand and carries out the entire harvest by hand.

Ferme Enimie et Guillaume Thiolairon in Saint-Vérand offers tours of the farm and its animals. Ferme Enimie also offers tastings of its agricultural products.

Domaine Girin in Saint-Vérand offers individual and group tours. It also offers product tastings.

The “Terroir des Pierres Dorées” tasting cellar of the Vignerons des Pierres Dorées in Saint-Vérand welcomes visitors for tastings.
