Wine and Paths

The Sentier viticole de Millery is a 7.7-kilometre circular trail with 111 metres of elevation gain and a duration of around 90 minutes. Information boards explain the work of the winegrowers, as well as vine cultivation and wine production; the trail is considered an educational and playful family outing. The trail also points to the caveaux of Millery, where visitors can taste local wines and fruit juices.

Millery’s vineyards now cover approximately 70 hectares and produce wine under the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée “Coteaux du Lyonnais”, awarded in 1984.

History and Architectural Heritage

Millery’s historic town centre developed around the church from the end of the Middle Ages onwards, with narrow houses lined up alongside one another. At the end of the 16th century, Millery became the residence of the Montagny family after the fortified Château de Montagny had become uninhabitable as a result of the Wars of Religion.

The Église Sainte-Croix was built in the 15th century and preserves Gothic elements such as the choir, tracery windows, the first four bays and rib vaults. It was built on the site of an earlier oratory and a cross.

The Maison Gonnard was built under the reign of Louis XIV by the notaries of the Chalamel family in a new neighbourhood below Millery church. It is being restored so that it can be opened to the public during the Journées du patrimoine in September and at the Rendez-Vous Découverte events organised by the Office de tourisme des Monts du Lyonnais.

Le Saint Sépulcre is a listed monument and is located on private property. The oratory, whose origins are uncertain, probably dates from the late 14th century and depicts a group of seven saints representing Christ’s burial.

Discovering the Town

The Monts du Lyonnais tourist office runs the three-kilometre Sentier découverte du patrimoine de Millery. Domaine Régis Descotes offers guided visits for individuals and groups, is certified for organic farming and grows nine grape varieties, most of which grow on glacially formed slopes typical of the Rhône Valley.
