Nature

The 400 m-long Chemin Nature runs between the banks of the Saône and the agricultural land of the neighboring municipalities. The Métropole de Lyon has classified it as an “Espace Naturel Sensible”. The paths of the Rives de Saône connect the town center of Fontaines-sur-Saône with the river via the paths of the Rives and the Clos du Maquis, and lead along the riverbank on foot as far as the neighboring municipality.

The circular hike De Fontaines-sur-Saône à Sathonay-Camp is 9.6 km long, takes 2 hours and 50 minutes, and has an elevation difference of 151 m. It starts at Place Carnot; the Pont de Fontaines stop is served by TCL lines 40, 70 and 77. The route passes through the Côtière of Fontaines-sur-Saône and the Vallon du Ravin. On the way back, it runs along the left bank of the Saône beside Île Roy and its riparian forest.

The wild forest of Île Roy on the route from Fontaines-sur-Saône is a habitat for the European beaver, the kingfisher and the collared dove.

Culture

The artists Le Gentil Garçon and Tadashi Kawamata contributed to the Fontaines-sur-Saône section of the Rives de Saône project. La Tour belvédère, a public artwork by Tadashi Kawamata, is located on the Promenade de Fontaines and offers views of the surrounding landscape. Also located on the promenade is Souvenir du monde inversé by Le Gentil Garçon: an artwork featuring a tree whose branches bear fish-shaped weather vanes originating from the last flood.

Les Cercles logiques is an artwork along the promenade made of cast-aluminium stumps that form a mysterious trail of clues. La Sucrerie on the promenade is a distinctive replica of the industrial landscape on the opposite bank of the Saône.

The present-day Eglise Saint Louis Roi was built in 1835. A chapel built in the 9th century has been preserved in the right aisle. The completely renovated church is classified as “rustique flamboyant” in style and is reminiscent of churches in Savoy and Piedmont.

Events

The Fontaines-sur-Saône Carnival takes place every year at the end of March and features numerous musical and costumed groups. In spring, Village Fant’artistique takes place in Fontaines-sur-Saône every two years, featuring numerous street activities for children.

Geographical location

The Collonges-Fontaines railway station is located in Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or, near Fontaines-sur-Saône. It offers bicycle parking, individual bicycle boxes, Vélo’v, car parking, carpooling facilities and connections to the TCL network.
