Courzieu: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Parc animalier de Courzieu is a 25-hectare protected natural area with two themed forest trails for discovering European wildlife. Visitors can observe grey wolves, Arctic wolves, free-flying birds of prey and marmots there.

Nature

La Tourbière, also known as “pré tremblant”, is considered the last peat bog in the Monts du Lyonnais and lies below the Crêt Châtelard in Courzieu. It serves as a reservoir for exceptional biodiversity. Part of Courzieu also lies within Les crêts boisés de l’ouest Lyonnais, the largest Espace Naturel Sensible in the Rhône department.

Culture and history

The Oppidum du Châtelard has a main construction phase dating from the Iron Age, as well as a later phase from the Iron Age and the Gallo-Roman period. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1989 and is located at an altitude of 882 metres on one of the Jumeaux peaks.

The Circuit du patrimoine de Courzieu passes through the village and uses eight information panels to explain the remains of the castle courtyard, the priory castle, the Saint Joseph chapel, wayside crosses and viticulture. It is open every day all year round and is permanently free to access. Guided tours with commentary can be arranged for groups of 10 or more by prior appointment.

The Chapelle de Pomeyrieux was inaugurated on 15 August 1945, bears the name “Notre dame de toutes grâces” and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The Sentier découverte de l'Aqueduc romain de la Brévenne comprises two hiking trails, a 7-km loop and a 10-km loop. The trails pass preserved sections of the Roman aqueduct of La Brévenne; information panels explain the remains found in Courzieu, including sections of canal, inspection shafts and a settling basin.

The Sentier des P'tits Loups is a permanently accessible and free family hike in Courzieu. Information panels cover the Roman aqueduct of Courzieu, the legend of the Lafont spring, and the local fauna and flora. The “Les Gnolus” app also offers a family treasure hunt based on a walking tour of Courzieu.

Activities

The Courzieu Bike Park has four downhill runs of varying difficulty, each 700 metres long. The Courzieu Aventure pump track was built from natural materials, without concrete or soil sealing.

The Courz’y Trail Park starts in the centre of Courzieu and offers six permanently established, fully marked trail routes ranging from 8 to 23 km. Free self-service showers are also available.

Festivals and cuisine

La vogue is an annual tradition held in Courzieu. It lasts three days, from Friday to Sunday evening, and includes a free dance evening on Saturday night; it is celebrated on the second weekend of September. The Fête des Classes takes place every year in May. The Conscrits procession is followed by a communal meal and a dance evening.

Visitors can try Mayosse in Courzieu, a cake made from shortcrust pastry, strawberry jam and almonds, which has been considered Courzieu’s official speciality since April 2023. The Mara des Bois route is one of a group of seven routes for discovering Courzieu as “strawberry country”.
