Charnay was built on a ridge. Its elevated location offers far-reaching views in all directions, particularly from the converted observation tower. The buildings also give the village its distinctive appearance: they are characterised by locally quarried golden limestone and are therefore part of the Beaujolais des Pierres Dorées landscape region.
Landscape
The Traverse des Pierres Dorées No. 11 loop runs through the vineyards. It offers views of the Azergues Valley and the Monts de Tarare and leads back to Charnay.
Culture
The Château de la Mansarde was built around 1650 for the secular lords and acquired by the municipality in 1948. The fortified castle in Charnay was built between the 12th and 13th centuries by the canons and counts of Lyon and now houses a post office.
The Church of Saint Christopher has a Romanesque apse and Romanesque bell tower, six Gothic side chapels, and a polychrome stone statue of Saint Christopher. The heritage room in the tower displays old tools used for work in viticulture and agriculture.
Walking Tours
The Charnay audio walks begin in the village square and follow low-traffic roads that are accessible to most people. The Parcours Découverte in Charnay is 1 km long, takes 30 to 45 minutes, and begins at Place du Château.
Wine and Music
Les Vendanges Musicales was expanded to two consecutive evenings and mobilises more than 120 volunteers every year. The Les Vendanges Musicales association was founded in January 2015, after the first edition of the festival took place in 2014. The festival bears the “Vignobles et Découvertes” label and promotes the local wine-growing and tourism economy by allowing visitors to discover the village of Charnay in a different way.
