Alex lies at the foot of the Dents de Lanfon (1,824 m) and the Dent du Cruet (1,833 m). From Aulp-riant Dessus, where you can access the GR 96, there is an exceptional view of Lake Annecy, the Aravis, the Bauges and the wild side of La Tournette.

Hiking

The Circuit de la cascade de Montviard circular trail is suitable for beginners, starts at the Villards-Dessus car park, takes two hours and has an elevation gain of 236 metres. The Circuit de la cascade de Montviard runs mostly through woodland.

In spring, the meadows in the hamlet of Villards-Dessus are covered with daffodils.

The route to the Chalet de la Rochette is a circular hike for experienced hikers, starts in the village square, takes four hours and has an elevation gain of 762 metres. It leads uphill through woodland to the Rochette Dessous alpine pasture, from where you can see Lake Annecy.

The Chalet de la Rochette is privately owned.

The route to the Chalet de l’Aulp-Riant is an expert-level route with an elevation gain of 949 metres; the ascent takes 3 hours and 5 minutes, starts at the car park in the square of Villard-Dessus and is designed as an out-and-back route.

Culture

The Château d'Arenthon is currently owned by a company and is not open to the public. It is a historic fortified house near Alex that watched over the exit of the Col de Bluffy and the Fier Valley. After its restoration, the Château d'Arenthon housed the Fondation d’Art Contemporain from 2001 to 2014.

Local area and getting there

Goat cheese from Alex is sold directly at the Chèvrerie d’Alex “Les Chamoisées”.

Alex can be reached by bus via line Y62/63 from the resorts in the Aravis, Thônes or Annecy.
