Bessas is situated at an altitude of 265 metres in a hilly landscape. From here, panoramic views extend for several kilometres across the neighbouring departments of Gard and Vaucluse as far as Mont Ventoux.

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Bessas is initially only deciding on the type of accommodation.

Culture and History

In the heart of the village of Bessas, directly next to the castle, stands the Church of Saint Etienne. It houses a polychrome wooden altarpiece dating from the mid-17th century, which was added to the supplementary list of historic monuments by a prefectural decree dated 10 October 2001. The altarpiece surrounds an 18th-century painting depicting the vision of Saint Etienne. The church windows were restored in 2017; two new windows were also installed.

The old stone houses of Bessas have been renovated in keeping with their style. They surround a castle dating from the end of the 16th century, which has four towers.

Nature

The Marais de Malibaud is a continental ZNIEFF type 1 covering an area of 1,288.99 hectares. It extends across, among others, the municipalities of Bessas, Saint-Sauveur-de-Cruzières, Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols-et-Avéjan and Barjac.

The wetlands of the Marais de Malibaud are home to remarkable flora and fauna, including amphibians and dragonflies. The dry grasslands are particularly rich in orchids; at the same time, they provide a habitat for birds of open countryside.

Things to Do

A signposted hiking trail around Bessas begins at the castle square and leads below the old cemetery to a viewpoint. It follows the former path to Brujas, known as the “chemin du Lac”, crosses the Condoubrie stream and returns via the new cemetery.

The Le Puy Lacher hiking route is a moderately difficult 8-km circular trail with 402 metres of elevation gain and a duration of 3 hours. It begins at the information point in the car park below Bessas town hall and is marked with white-and-yellow PR trail markers. Along the route, the Montagne de la Serre offers several viewpoints.

Bessas is also part of the permanent route of the cycling event L’Ardéchoise.

Regional Production

Moulin Le Verdalet produces and sells artisanally made olive oil and offers an introductory tour.
