Culture and History

The Château de La Forêt-sur-Sèvre stands on two islands surrounded by the Sèvre: one is home to the château, while the other contains the remains of the former outbuildings. The château is partially protected as a historic monument. This protection covers the façades and roofs, the ground of both islands with the château and the former outbuildings, as well as the surrounding bodies of water. The listing was made by decree on 19 July 1963.

During the Vendée Wars, the château was looted and burned down. It was rebuilt from 1810 onwards, with the restoration completed in 1837.

The Chapelle de l’Ouvroir was consecrated on 14 September 1845. It was extended in 1851, tripling its floor area. It contains an altarpiece depicting the Passion of Christ and a Pietà, which has been listed in the register of historic monuments since 2014.

The Logis de la Jobtière is located in La Ronde, in the municipality of La Forêt-sur-Sèvre. It is believed to have been rebuilt around 1480. The dwelling and the long outbuildings form a courtyard surrounded by ditches; this lies within a complex with water-filled moats.

The chalice and paten in the church of La Forêt-sur-Sèvre have been protected as historic movable objects since 8 November 2001.
