Pioussay: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The Château de Jouhé combines several construction periods: the residential building dates from the 15th century and was remodelled in the 17th century. The keep has four storeys above the ground floor, including an attic, as well as a battlement walk with machicolations. The fief of Jouhé was first mentioned in writing in 1147.

The Église Saint-Martin also displays various historical construction phases, the most important of which date from the 12th and 15th centuries. Its present-day choir and the southern chapel were built later, at the end of the 15th century. The church has a rectangular floor plan with buttresses and a chapel added to the south. The nave consists of four bays with vaults resting on transverse arches and pillars with Romanesque capitals. It also features a Gothic portal and a large tracery opening with flamboyant tracery in the choir.

The wall paintings in the choir complement these architectural features: a Passion cycle is depicted on the north side, while the Resurrection is shown on the south wall.

Hiking and Cycling

There are two circular trails of different lengths in Pioussay. “La balade de la Châtagne” is 3.7 kilometres long and starts opposite the Château de Jouhé. The circular trail “Entre château et fresque sur Jouhé de Pioussay” is 11.8 kilometres long.

The hiking trails in the municipality of Valdelaume are circular routes with a starting information board; blue trail markers indicate the way back to the starting point. The cycle route “La Boutonnaise” also runs through the municipality of Valdelaume. The cycle route “V93 – La Vélidéale” connects the Marais Poitevin with Lac de Vassivière and runs through Valdelaume.
