Cuvilly is associated with the life of Saint Julie Billiart and with the Château de Séchelles: Julie Billiart was born here in 1751, while Jean de Poix had the Château de Séchelles built in 1530.

Culture

Saint Julie Billiart founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Amiens in 1804. A procession with a banner, reliquary and relics of Saint Julie Billiart sets out from her birthplace; a solemn mass is then held in the church of Cuvilly.

The town’s religious architecture includes the Église Saint-Éloi, which was almost completely destroyed in 1918. The choir of the Église Saint-Eloi combines the Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance styles. The church also houses an exceptional lectern dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Château de Séchelles is privately owned today; two Gîtes de France have been established there.

History

Cuvilly and Séchelles formed an important seigneurie in the 13th century. Around 1740, Jean Baptiste Moreau had the Château de Séchelles demolished and replaced with an 18th-century neoclassical residence.

Cuvilly is traversed by the former royal road from Paris to Lille.

The long-distance hiking trail GR 123 runs through Cuvilly; its route lies in the northeastern quadrant of Cuvilly.
