Almost a quarter of Fougeré’s area is occupied by the La Chaize Forest, which covers around 600 hectares. The Fougeré Forest is considered the municipality’s most important tourist attraction and is described as a refuge for numerous species. These include the marsh fritillary butterfly, which is protected in France and Europe. Picnic tables in La Chaize Forest invite visitors to take a break.
Those who choose Fougeré as a holiday destination will want to rent a holiday apartment there.
Nature
At the end of 2022, six trails were opened in La Chaize Forest, accessible on foot or by bicycle. As part of an initiative to enhance the forest and the roads connecting the municipality’s villages, 80 kilometres of trails were also planned, created and signposted. The Boucle de la Ricotière leads to the Étang du Ruisseau de Noailles and its wildlife park.
Trails
The Sentier du Châtaigner is an 18-kilometre hiking trail and circular route that begins at the Lande Bonnaud picnic area in Fougeré Forest. It passes through one of the few remaining forests in the La Roche-sur-Yon metropolitan area. The Parcours ludique et sportif in La Chaize Forest is 1.2 kilometres long and includes five stations.
The Boucle de la Ricotière hike passes close to the small Château de la Ricotière.
Culture and History
The Église Notre-Dame stands in the town centre and was built in 1870 according to plans by the departmental architect M. Clair. At Pierre Brune, there is a 19th-century château and remains of the original enclosing wall of a former priory.
The Couvent des Cerisiers is a priory founded in the 12th century that was dependent on Fontevraud Abbey. It preserves its original portal with a double arcade.
Traditions
Fougeré bears the designation “Village d’Accueil des Véhicules d’Époque”. Every year in July, the Fête de l’Été takes place with a communal meal, music and fireworks.
