Activities

Culture and History

The Chapelle de la Ceriseraie is a landmark on a hill in Saint-Mars-du-Désert. Its grounds also include a mill; the Chapelle de la Ceriseraie was founded in 1602. The Moulin des Places in Saint-Mars-du-Désert was used to generate electricity.

The present-day Église Saint-Médard stands in the heart of the town and is an important part of the municipality’s architectural and historical heritage. It was built from the 1850s onwards according to plans by the Nantes architect Henri Gilée (1816–1885); it was also rebuilt in the pointed-arch Gothic Revival style. An earlier church in Saint-Mars-du-Désert had origins dating back to the 10th century.

The four bells of the Église Saint-Médard were baptised on 7 August 1877. Frescoes by the Lemasson brothers are located above the door in the west wall of the northern transept. One of the frescoes was painted in 1923.

The presbytery of Saint-Mars-du-Désert houses two statues entitled “Vierge à l'Enfant” and “Christ en croix”.

Geographical Location
