Culture and History

The Abbaye de Blanche-Couronne, a Benedictine abbey founded in the 12th century, is located in the town. Its complex combines medieval and Neoclassical architecture.

At the Tannerie de la Berthelais, animal hides were processed into leather until the end of the First World War; its activity has been documented since 1793. The former tannery's tall chimney remains, as do the former manor house and stables opposite the workshops.

The Prieuré de Frény is a historic site in the vicinity of La Chapelle-Launay. The wider regional area also includes the Château de la Bretonnière, a chateau, the Abbaye de Saint-Gildas-des-Bois as a historic site, and the ruins of the Abbaye de Buzay.

Nature and Trails

The Sentier des Quatre Vallées hiking trail is a moderately difficult, 9.4 km circular route. It runs along the Sillon de Bretagne and offers views of the Loire Valley and the river estuary as far as the Pont de Saint-Nazaire.

The Sentier des 4 Vallées runs mostly beneath trees. Some sections of the Sentier de la Vallée Mismy may be damp or flooded in winter.

Landscape

The Île de Lavau is an island in the vicinity of La Chapelle-Launay. The Île Pipy, the Île du Petit Carnet, and the Île de la Maréchale are also nearby.

Local Life

The market at 19, La Feuillée brings together around ten producers every Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. who offer organically farmed products.
