Machecoul: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Machecoul is home to the Corderie Plantive Écomusée, whose workshop was used by three generations of rope-makers to produce agricultural ropes from 1900 to 1996. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Machecoul is thereby choosing the accommodation for their stay.

Culture and history

The Église de la Trinité is a neo-Gothic church; construction began in 1863 and was completed in 1881. Admission is free. Visitors can see the exceptional stained-glass windows and the surviving sandstone walkways of the 13th-century church.

The Château de Machecoul has been classified as a Monument historique since 1925. It was destroyed after the Revolution and the Vendée Wars; the surviving remains still reveal defensive elements and some Renaissance decorations.

The Abbaye de la Chaume was founded in the 11th century and was the most important Benedictine establishment in Machecoul-Saint-Même. Access is free; guided tours are available on request from the Association de Sauvegarde de l’Abbaye de la Chaume.

The private Musée du Cirque de Machecoul displays circus models in various scales, as well as posters, stage sets, costumes, programmes, postcards and other material.

The orienteering course at Grand Étang has 26 controls and takes an estimated 1 hour and 30 minutes. It includes a fun questionnaire about fauna, flora and history.

The guided canoe tour “Canoë sympa” begins in the heart of Machecoul. The trip along the Falleron leads from the town centre towards the tranquillity of the Marais; along the route there are meadows, typical birds and numerous canals.

Local production

The Fromagerie Beillevaire in Machecoul offers tours of its production workshops, which can be combined with a tasting or a cheese menu, depending on the option selected. It also offers a half-day nature and canoe excursion with a picnic made from its own products.

Landscape and nature

From the roof of the Four à Chaux, you can see the Marais breton; an orientation table has been installed at this location.

The Forêt de Machecoul is home to several rare breeding birds of prey in the Pays de la Loire, as well as rare or endangered insects, including beetles, dragonflies and butterflies.
