Nature

The La Chauminette circular trail passes through sunken lanes and wooded avenues, past a pond and up to Mont Juillet, the highest point in Les Touches.

History

Flint tools dating from the Neolithic period were found at Mont Juillet. A mill was built there in the Middle Ages; subsequently, four more mills operated there until the Second World War.

La Vieille Cure served as a hunting lodge for the Condé family in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is considered the oldest building in Les Touches; its foundations date from the 14th century.

Only the cylindrical tower remains of the original Manoir du Bois-Souchard building. The Manoir du Bois-Souchard is one of the oldest buildings in Les Touches.

The historic coal mines associated with Les Touches extended over 2,100 to 2,200 hectares and crossed the municipal boundaries.

The Maison Rouge was the site of the first maquis recognized by London on 16 October 1943. The Maison Rouge maquis was moved to the Saffré forest on 16 June 1944.

Church and Festivals

The Church of Saint Mélaine contains an 18th-century polychrome statue of Saint James of Compostela; it recalls that Les Touches was a stopping point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The Church of Saint Mélaine features Gothic-inspired architecture with a low-vaulted choir, slender columns and ribbed windows.

The Saint-Jacques Fair was authorized for Les Touches in 1668; it took place on 1 May. In addition to the Saint-Jacques Fair, the historic Saint-Mélayne Fair was also held in Les Touches.

Winegrowing

At the end of the 19th century, Les Touches still had around 500 hectares of vineyards, where Muscadet and Gros Plant were grown.
