Besné showcases its history through individual, clearly dated monuments. The Saint-Second Chapel was rebuilt around 1640 on older foundations. The large windows of Saint-Friard Church are decorated with stained-glass windows depicting the life of Saint Friard. In Besné’s present-day cemetery stands a Celtic cross from the 15th or 16th century, which was moved there in 1872.

Two 7th-century sarcophagi were placed in the church’s semi-underground crypt; they contained the bodies of the hermits Friard and Second for a long time. Around 1880, it was decided to replace the old church with a new building; the architect Fraboulet designed the plans for this new church. The large organ in the gallery of Besné parish church was built in 1907–1908 by the Nantes organ builder Louis Debierre.

Events

The Espace A Cappella venue offers a varied municipal cultural programme, with one performance per month. It has retractable stands with 236 seats. Visitors can reach Espace A Cappella on foot from the Parc des îles car park.

The Folk en Scènes festival takes place in spring. In Besné, it presents emerging and established artists from the local and international scenes. Public organ concerts are also held every year in Besné parish church.

Nature

The Marais de Saint-Second is a protected, unspoilt wetland. The long-distance GR3 hiking trail begins in Besné on the edge of the Brière Regional Nature Park.

Hiking

“La Chalandiere et le Brivet” is an easy 9.3 km circular route. The circular route starts in Besné in the Brière Regional Nature Park and passes through wetlands; the paths may be affected by rainfall and changing water levels.

Canoë Kayak Besné has lake and river kayaks, two- and three-person canoes, and various paddleboards, including a large paddleboard.
