Culture and History

The Musée du Grand Blockhaus is a five-storey World War II Atlantic Wall command post that presents the history of the Saint-Nazaire fortress. The Musée des Marais Salants is housed in former salt warehouses and offers a tour focusing on the cultural heritage and salt-marsh area of the Guérande Peninsula.

The Chapelle du Mûrier is a 15th-century Flamboyant Gothic chapel and is now a ruin. The Église Saint-Guénolé contains several works by Jean Fréour, including “Notre-Dame du Précieux Sang”, “Christ en croix” and “La Sainte Famille”. The 70-metre-high Tour Saint-Guénolé offers views of the ocean and the salt marshes. The tower of the Église Saint-Guénolé was built in the 17th century; the terrace of the Tour Saint-Guénolé can be reached via an internal spiral staircase with 184 steps.

The Moulin de la Falaise dates from the 16th century and was rebuilt identically at its present location on the dune in 1925. Its traditional mechanism is still used today by a miller to process organic buckwheat grains into organic buckwheat flour.

Trégaté is a Paludier village situated high on a rock, with narrow lanes, stone houses, a bakehouse, a well, a granite calvary and 18th-century dormer windows. Kermoisan has a water tower with a fresco depicting the work of the Paludiers. In Roffiat, there is a wooden cross decorated with thirteen hearts and a statue of Notre-Dame du Bonheur. Kervalet is one of the traditional Paludier villages of Batz-sur-Mer. La Croix de Trégaté is a granite cross that replaced a several-centuries-old cross in 1937 after it had been knocked down and broken by a lorry.

The centre of Batz-sur-Mer has protected lanes known as “venelles”.

Nature and Trails

The Dune de la Falaise is home to many protected plant and animal species and has an educational trail. The Sentier des Douaniers is a 5.5-kilometre coastal loop trail. The Vélocéan cycling route crosses Batz-sur-Mer and offers views of the region’s natural environment and cultural heritage. The Cœur Historique loop is a 1.3-kilometre walking route through the centre of Batz-sur-Mer and leads, among other places, to the Église Saint-Guénolé, the Chapelle du Mûrier and the Musée des Marais Salants.

Water and Coast

The École de Voile Valentin offers windsurfing, introductory sessions in dinghy sailing and catamaran sailing, trips out to sea and coastal cruises. At low tide, visitors can find shellfish and crustaceans while shore fishing in Batz-sur-Mer; the tourist office offers introductions to this activity during spring tides. Plage de la Govelle is used for surfing, bodyboarding and stand-up paddleboarding.

TER line 01 between Nantes, Saint-Nazaire and Le Croisic stops at Batz-sur-Mer railway station, which is 350 metres from the Musée des Marais Salants.
