Brouains is located between a deeply cut valley and wooded hills. The Sée, a coastal river, flows through the village and the Valley of a Hundred Mills. In the past, papermakers used the power of the river there to drive paper mills.
Culture and History
The present-day building of the Chapelle Saint-Anne de Montfort dates from 1850. Every year, the Assemblée de Montfort takes place around the chapel as a regional, semi-religious and civic festival.
The Église Notre-Dame de Brouains was built at the end of the 15th century and has a painted and gilded wooden high altar from the 18th century. The architectural features of the Calvaire du Logis suggest that it dates from the 17th century.
The Fontaine Saint-Gilles once fed a large washhouse situated at a lower level. The waters of the Fontaine Saint-Gilles were attributed with healing properties.
Routes and Landscape
The Les Moulins de la Vallée de la Sée route begins at the car park in the village centre. It passes the Calvaire du Logis and the Chapelle de Montfort, goes by the private manor house Moulin de la Sée and the Moulin du Désert, and runs close to the Fontaine Saint-Gilles.
The GR 22 between Paris and Mont-Saint-Michel passes through Brouains. Four signposted circular routes begin in the village of Brouains. The Stade VTT Espace Loisirs Nature des Bosses de Brouains has various trails.
Surroundings
The surroundings of Brouains include the Abbaye des Blanches, a historic site, and the Château de Vire, a castle. The Église Notre-Dame de Vire, a church, and the Église Sainte-Anne, a church, are also located in the surrounding area.
