History

The Musée de la Libération is located in Fort du Roule, which was inaugurated on June 6, 1954, as the Musée de la Guerre et de la Libération. The present-day Fort du Roule was rebuilt under Napoleon III between 1853 and 1857 and reaches an elevation of 117 metres.

The Musée de la Libération displays a collection of objects illustrating the everyday lives of civilians and military personnel during the Second World War. The museum grounds offer a viewpoint over Cherbourg-en-Cotentin and the sea.
