Culture and History

An unusual historical trace in Vénès leads to the Château de l’Ourmarié: in 1603, Guilhaume de Nautonnier de Castelfranc established a printing press there. It was set up to publish a work on the “mécanométrie de l’ayment”.

In the 16th century, Vénès was the scene of bloody conflicts between Catholics and Protestants because of its fortified castles. The Château de Vénès dates from the 13th century; part of the building is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. The Château de Vénès is open daily all year round.

The parish church of Saint John in Vénès is a modern building dating from 1857 and is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It is vaulted and consists of three bays and an apsidal choir. The dome-shaped bell tower is topped by a campanile with four columns.

Hiking

The Sentier des Tendes à la Bancalié passes through Vénès. It is a difficult, 19.3-kilometre circular hike and leads towards a plateau above Lac de la Bancalié.
