The village of Gimbrède lies on gentle slopes descending from the western hills towards the Auroue Valley. The medieval village centre is located on the southern slope of the hill, halfway up and slightly elevated. Around the village centre, a small pond and numerous streams shape the landscape; the Auroue River also flows not far from the village.

Village Character and History

Gimbrède preserves a medieval village character with old half-timbered houses whose façades are arranged in projecting rows. The village was surrounded by walls and had two gates. The existence of a Templar commandery in Gimbrède is documented for the second half of the 12th century.

Culture and Historic Sites

The Monastère Saint-Gény, a monastery, is located in the surroundings of Gimbrède. The wider region is also home to the Abbaye de Boüillas, a historic site; the Ancien couvent des Dominicains de Prouilhan, also a historic site; and the Cathédrale Saint-Caprais, a church.

The Église Saint-Jacques de Rouillac stands in the centre of the hamlet of Rouillac; the château forms one of the church’s short sides. The western door of the church is a few metres opposite the château’s door. Its wall bell tower has an unusual semicircular gable with three arcades.
