Culture and History
The heritage of Courties consists above all of the small Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens Church. Its octagonal, slate-covered bell tower was built in 1734. The church has a rectangular floor plan with a three-bay nave that ends in a flat chancel closure pierced by a Gothic opening.
The slate roof of the bell tower, the tiled roofs of the nave, sacristy, Chapel of the Virgin Mary and porch, as well as the ceiling with poplar panelling, were completely renovated; the church also has a terracotta-tile floor. Its existence has been documented since the late 13th century, and it was acquired by Lacaze-Dieu Abbey in 1274.
The southern porch of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens Church leads into a former classroom. The parish registers of Courties record numerous baptisms and marriages from the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, the forests and clay soils in Courties made it possible to establish two tileworks. In 2023, the municipality decided to restore Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens Church.
Geographical Setting
Courties has a highly dispersed settlement structure. The village lies on the ridge line of the Route des Bastides et Castelnaux, between Beaumarchès and Armous-et-Cau.
