History and culture
The Donjon de Bassoues was built from 1368 to 1371 under the direction of Arnaud Aubert, cardinal and archbishop of Auch. In 1840, the donjon was listed as a historic monument; it was the first building in the Gers department to receive this protection.
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was listed in its entirety as a historic monument by an order dated 13 September 2018.
The Basilique Saint-Fris was built over the tomb of Saint Fris. From the outset, the church was a pilgrimage site, and it also has a crypt. Around 1520, it was restored and fitted with two Renaissance-style portals on the west and south sides.
From the top of the Donjon de Bassoues, clear weather offers a panoramic view over the Gers countryside, the hills in the south of Gers and the Pyrenees.
Hiking
The La randonnée de Saint-Fris hiking route is 5.6 kilometres long and suitable for beginners. It starts at the market hall in the centre of Bassoues and follows the lakeshore to the Chapelle Saint-Fris.
