History

On 21 June 1944, German troops attacked the village of Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon, partially destroying it. From 1942 onwards, Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon was home to a significant resistance network. West of the village stands a peristyle memorial commemorating the fighters who fell for freedom.

Every year on 21 June, a memorial ceremony takes place in Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon.

Culture

Two Romanesque arcades of the former Abrin commandery have been preserved. Its chapel was originally built with a single nave and a flat-ended choir. The now-bricked-up door and the burial niche of the former Abrin commandery were listed as historic monuments by decree of 10 December 1929. The Abrin commandery is located on the Via Podiensis pilgrimage route, which leads from Le Puy.

A still-visible round tower from the 14th century has been preserved in Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon. The medieval village included a 13th-century hall castle with a square tower that served as a keep.

The Church of Saint-Luperc has a rectangular ground plan, a flat-ended choir and a bell tower; it dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. The parish church of Notre-Dame de la Nativité features Romanesque remains and has been restored.

One of the bells of the Church of Notre-Dame de la Nativité dates from 1571. One bell from this church is classified as a historic monument.
