Landscape and Nature
The municipality of Soulan lies within the 8,000-hectare ZNIEFF “Massif de l'Arize, versant sud”, which extends from elevations of 440 to 1,680 m. This area includes, among other things, well-preserved bocage landscapes, beech and beech-fir forests, a dense network of waterways, rocky habitats, heathlands and mountain meadows. Soulan is also located within the 42,000-hectare ZNIEFF “Massif de l'Arize”, with elevations ranging from 390 to 1,685 m; its higher areas include natural caves, rocky habitats, heathlands and mountain to subalpine meadows.
The Col d'Ayens is classified as a remarkable viewpoint within the Parc Naturel Régional and offers a panorama from Mont Valier to Pic des Trois Seigneurs. The Piste forestière du Taus in the Taus district of the municipality of Soulan offers several viewpoints of the high Pyrenean mountain range, including Pic Rouge de Bassiès and Mont Valier, as well as of the valley-floor landscapes of Castet-d'Aleu and Soulan.
Views and Trails
The Col d'Ayens is a starting point for numerous hikes on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. There is also an arboretum with native deciduous tree species, seven picnic tables and a water point for refreshing yourself and watering horses. The association “La Soulatane” organises a hike and a mountain-bike trail course at the Col d'Ayens.
Culture and History
Marguerite de Serres, Lady of Soulan, had the Notre-Dame de Serres chapel built in the 12th century at the southern exit of Saint-Pierre. A very large number of traditional barns form part of Soulan's characteristic small architectural heritage; many are increasingly being restored or preserved while maintaining their architectural integrity. The former residential castle Château du Pontaud is now a ruin.
The Saint-Martin Church in the Buleix district of Soulan contains a memorial ensemble commemorating those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. The Saint-Pierre Church in Soulan contains a memorial ensemble consisting of a commemorative plaque, a flag dedicated to the Sacred Heart and a statue of Joan of Arc on a console.
Local Life
The Petit Marché de Soulan takes place from April to October every second Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. under the market hall in Saint-Pierre. Local products on offer include bread, vegetables, cheese, yoghurt, eggs, meat depending on slaughtering, jams, craft-brewed beer, plants and natural cosmetics. Every Petit Marché de Soulan event features live music and a lively atmosphere.
The traditional village festival Fête de la SEN PEY D'AOUST takes place every year over three days, from Friday to Sunday, on the second weekend in August.
