Culture and history

The Église Saint-Valier combines Romanesque, Gothic and modern architectural elements. Its western portal was classified as a historic monument by decree of 26 October 1925. The Église Saint-Valier, with the exception of the classified portal, was listed as a historic monument on 19 May 2005.

The historic character of Saint-Girons also includes Gallo-Roman remains, Romanesque chapels and folk traditions. The Ancien château in Saint-Girons consists of a two-storey main building flanked by four pavilions with diamond-shaped floor plans. The façades and roofs of the Ancien château in Saint-Girons were listed as historic monuments by decree of 6 June 1988.

The Maison du Chemin de la Liberté presents a permanent exhibition about escapes and border crossings in the Pyrenees during the Second World War, including the history of the Couserans. The Chemin des Évadés begins in Saint-Girons and ends in Sort.

Landscape and trails

The Voie Verte passes through Saint-Girons towards Saint-Lizier in the Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées ariégeoises. From Saint-Girons, you can walk along the banks of the Salat and explore the hills above the town.

Market and events

The Saint-Girons market takes place every Saturday on the Place du champs de mars. Among other things, it offers mountain honey, cheese, meat, cured meats and local produce.

Autrefois le Couserans features rural performances, arts and crafts and food markets, vintage car parades, exhibitions and equestrian displays in Saint-Girons. The RITE festival celebrates traditional music and dances from around the world in a festive and convivial atmosphere.
