Escosse: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The parish church of the Nativity of Mary in Escosse appears to have been built in the 17th century; its west façade bears the date 1636, while a carved stone slab at the south chapel bears the inscription “DEO OPTIMO DICATUM 1659”.

Culture

The burial chapel of the Subra family is a medium-sized neoclassical structure that very probably dates from the last quarter of the 19th century. The chapel is a rectangular, elevated building above brick-built burial vaults and is accessed via a straight double staircase made of dressed sandstone. Its architectural details include a triangular pediment and a cast-iron door with an openwork cross motif.

The first church in Escosse was located in the 11th century at Saint-Arnier, northeast of the settlement. It is mentioned in 1074 as a former abbey that still contained the graves of members of religious orders. In the Escosse cemetery, the funerary monuments, grave crosses and burial sites are predominantly made of limestone or sandstone.

The Escosse war memorial was inaugurated at 2 p.m. on Sunday, 23 April 1922.

Nature

Escosse is divided from north to south by the valley of the Estrique. East of the valley, the hilly landscape is difficult to access, while the gentler slopes to the west are crossed by numerous streams running from southwest to northeast.

Geographical setting

According to the Napoleonic cadastral plan, the historic centre of Escosse had a trapezoidal, fortified layout. The Tambouret stream ran along its western side, while the church stood on the southern side of a spacious, open esplanade. The D 626 and D 119 follow the stream courses; the D 110 connects the centre of Escosse with Pamiers.

At Escosse church square, Chez Ginette is a bar and brasserie serving traditional regional cuisine.
