Culture and History

Rancon combines distinctive buildings with vibrant local traditions. The fortified church of Rancon was built at the end of the 12th century; its bell tower is covered with chestnut shingles. The Chapelle Saint-Sébastien is dedicated to the patron saint of conscripts. It houses a 17th-century statue of Saint Sebastian, which is carried in a procession every year.

Another notable building in the village is the Lanterne des morts of Rancon. The circular granite structure dates from the 12th century and is 6.66 metres high. From the Lanterne des morts, it is a 10- to 20-minute walk to the railway station.

Dozens of species of medicinal and aromatic plants grow in the botanical garden L’Or des Simples in Rancon. The grounds include a two-kilometre sensory trail. At L’Or des Simples, Laurent Pasteur offers walks during which visitors can discover the plants along the paths.

The Sentier de la Gartempe is a circular trail starting in Rancon and offering the opportunity to discover the Gartempe Valley.
