Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Maximin preserves architectural elements ranging from a Romanesque nave dating from the 10th century to chapels from the 16th century. It is believed to date from the Carolingian period around the year 1000 and is said to be one of the oldest surviving churches in Limousin.

A local tradition is the Procession de Neuf lieues, which takes place every year on Whit Monday from Magnac-Laval and through its surrounding area in honour of Saint Maximin. The procession covers a route of approximately 53 kilometres with 48 stops; its course has remained almost unchanged since the late 16th century.
