Châlus: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Château de Châlus-Chabrol was built around the 11th century on a rocky promontory at the initiative of the Viscounts of Limoges and served to control important routes. Richard Cœur de Lion died at the Château de Châlus-Chabrol on 26 March 1199. The château has reopened to visitors.

History and Culture

The Église de Lageyrat was built in the 10th century, is dedicated to Saint Étienne, and combines Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The local Vie Lageyrat association maintains the church and opens it to the public.

The restored Chapelle Notre Dame de Séchaud houses exhibitions and cultural events. At the Écomusée du Pays de Châlus, numerous donated tools, implements, pieces of furniture and items of clothing provide insights into local rural life in the 19th and 20th centuries. Guided tours are available for groups there on request.

Townscape

The Tardoire River flows between Châlus’s two historic settlement centres. Châlus’s Ville-Haute is arranged around the elevated Château de Châlus-Chabrol, while the Ville-Basse developed near the Château de Châlus-Maulmont.

Getting Around

The Voie Verte des Hauts de Tardoire runs for 13 kilometres between Châlus and Oradour-sur-Vayres. It is suitable for people with reduced mobility, cyclists, pedestrians and wheelchair users.

Visitor Information

The Château de Châlus-Maulmont was built around 1280 at the initiative of Géraud de Maulmont and is a stop on the Route Richard Cœur de Lion. It can be visited by appointment; on Saturdays in July and August, visits without an appointment are possible from 3 to 6 p.m.
