History and culture

The Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste priory in Aureil was founded in 1080 by the hermit Saint Gaucher, and its church was consecrated in 1093. The 11th-century church in Aureil is open to the public. The present Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste priory church in Aureil dates back to a building from the 12th century, which was extended in the 13th century. Its magnificent wooden choir design dates from the end of the 15th century.

Paths and landscapes

The Sentier du Puy in Aureil is an easy, 7.4-kilometre trail that takes approximately two hours on foot. Along the way, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape open up. The Sentier de Muret in Aureil is an easy, 3.5-kilometre hiking trail that takes approximately one hour on foot. Along the Sentier de Muret, you can discover dry-stone walls typical of the region and the church with its cockerel.

The Sentier des Ifs begins at the church square and leads through fields and along ponds. The Sentier du Pigeonnier passes through hilly countryside with rural cultural treasures; a dovecote can be seen along the way.

Events and local products

“Les Boucles d'Aureil” takes place every year on the first Sunday in May and includes two running routes of 11.1 and 21.2 kilometres. The association Courses et Randos d'Aureil organises several additional hikes throughout the year.

The “Apéros Paysans” event was held in Aureil for its third edition and offered tastings of local quality products.
