Saint-Gence: Gallic history and trails

Saint-Gence combines Gallic history with archaeological finds, 16th-century buildings and hiking trails where you can discover ponds, shady paths and majestic trees. Gallic traces and historic buildings

A Gallic settlement already existed at the site of Saint-Gence’s town centre at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 2nd century BC. To the west, on the promontory of Motte-Chalard, stands the protohistoric fortified site of Camp de César. The site was added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments on 6 February 1980. The settlement and fortification provide two concrete points of reference for the area’s early history.

The place name also reaches back into history: Saint-Gence derives from the local martyr Gentianus. Around 1315, the place was called Sanctus Gentianus. The recorded form of the name makes the connection between today’s name and Gentianus visible, adding another historical trace to the archaeological evidence.

The municipality inaugurated the Musée Archéologique de Saint-Gence on 29 November 2019. The museum displays some of the finds from ten years of archaeological excavations in the area. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting options in advance. Two other historical points of reference date from the 16th century: the Château de la Chassagne and the Château des Monts. Together with the Gallic settlement and the fortified site, they offer a glimpse of different periods in the history of Saint-Gence.

Hiking trails and route lengths

Several hiking trails pass quiet ponds, shady paths and majestic trees. On the “Sur les pas des Lémovices” route, you will pass the Chevillou mill. The route therefore draws attention to historic buildings as well as the landscape.

There are also two clearly named routes for different activities: a 25 km mountain biking and hiking route in Saint-Gence, and the 12 km TERRA-AVENTURA trail “Tous en Celtes!” (circuit Ziclou). Their lengths set the two options apart, while the activities listed for each offer a different focus. This comparison can be a first guide when planning your trip; then choose the type of route that interests you and the length that suits your plans.
