The Forêt d'Épagne is located in the municipalities of Saint-Martin-Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Pierre-Chérignat. Its classification developed in several stages: in 1980, it was initially designated as a ZNIEFF; on 7 July 1994, it received a biotope protection order; and finally, in accordance with the 1992 Habitats Directive, it was included in the Natura 2000 network.

The island of Vassivière is also located in the wider regional area surrounding Saint-Martin-Sainte-Catherine.

Trails

The Circuit Pédestre N° 54 “Le chemin de l’Etang” circular hiking trail is 3.1 kilometres long, takes one hour, and is considered very easy.

The Véloroute V56 “Chemin Jacquaire Via Vézelay” runs from Crozant to Saint-Martin-Sainte-Catherine and is 80 kilometres long.

Culture
