Culture and History

The Château de la Mothe was built in the 12th century. In the 15th century, a pentagonal corner tower with a spiral staircase was added. The Château de la Mothe was surrounded by a moat that was later filled in.

The Église du bourg dates from the 14th century; its bell tower and roof were renovated in 1755. The church includes a northern chapel called Villelume and a southern chapel called La Mothe.

The Chapelle du Calvaire was built in the 19th century. It replaced an older, dilapidated building that had belonged to the Château de la Mothe.

Nature and Hiking

The Source du Cher is located 1 km west of Mérinchal. It can be visited free of charge all year round.

The 62 km section of the GR® 41 Vallée du Cher in the Creuse passes the source of the Cher in Mérinchal and can be completed in 3 or 4 stages.

Par Monts et Par Vergnes is one of the four signposted hiking trails in the municipality of Mérinchal and is among the first three to be included in the Plan Départemental des Itinéraires de Promenade et de Randonnée (PDIPR).

Cycling

The local loop 40 is a 17 km cycling route that starts at the Château de la Mothe in Mérinchal. It follows the hilly roads of Mérinchal; in clear weather, the nearby volcanoes of the Auvergne can be seen from the route.
