Châtelus-le-Marcheix: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Château d’Aymerigo Marchez stood on a rocky spur overlooking a meander of the Thaurion by 70 metres. The Saint-Jacques stage from Châtelus to Bourganeuf climbs to 628 metres at Puy de Rocheguette. On this stage, the Thaurion is crossed three times, offering different impressions of its valley.

Paths and landscape

The CM8 Les Voies Antiques circular trail can be split at kilometre 5; the variant then continues via La Chateneide and Saint Goussaud on the SG4.

There are also signposted walking and horse-riding trails around Châtelus-le-Marcheix, offering views over the bodies of water.

Water

The Plan d'eau du Barrage de l'Etroit is a 25-hectare lake and a fishing spot in Châtelus-le-Marcheix. At the Barrage de l'Etroit site, there are tennis courts, children's play areas, a mountain bike rental service, and walking and horse-riding trails open all year round. In summer, pedal boats, boats and fishing are available at the Plan d'eau du Barrage de l'Etroit.

Culture and history

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was originally a rectangular single-nave building, possibly dating from the 13th century. In the 15th century, it was given a vault with four bays resting on polygonal capitals with finely carved, face-shaped corbels. In the 16th century, the church was extended on the south side over almost its entire length.

Two notable yew trees beside the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary frame a Gallo-Roman altar dedicated to Mercury, which was converted into a Christian altar.

The historic site of Abbaye Notre-Dame du Palais is located in the vicinity of Châtelus-le-Marcheix. The Abbatiale Saint-Barthélémy de Bénévent l'Abbaye church is also nearby.

The island of Vassivière and the Archives départementales de la Creuse are located in the wider regional surroundings of Châtelus-le-Marcheix.

Nature

Otters, genets, wildcats, peregrine falcons, ravens, white-throated dippers, European nightjars and crag martins are found in the Châtelus-le-Marcheix region. Numerous bat species are also found there; their presence is considered an indication of the biological diversity in a ZNIEFF/Natura 2000 zone.
