Nature

The Étang des Landes was designated a national nature reserve in 2004. The Réserve Naturelle de l’Etang des Landes covers 165 hectares, 102 hectares of which are accounted for by the Étang des Landes. The reserve is home to 950 animal species, including 240 bird species. The flora comprises more than 480 species.

Paths and Observation

A signposted 7-kilometre path leads all the way around the Réserve Naturelle de l’Etang des Landes. A path just under 3 kilometres long, accessible to people with reduced mobility, leads to the Affût des Trois Bouleaux and back.

Four observation points are located around the Étang des Landes, offering close-up views of the birds in the reserve. The four birdwatching points at the Étang des Landes are freely accessible. The Grand Affût is not accessible to people with reduced mobility because it is elevated.

From the car park, a 300-metre footpath leads through the bocage landscape along a rural track. It includes an observation pontoon overlooking the bocage landscape and a landscaped pond with a discovery pontoon. The Étang des Landes grounds are freely accessible all year round.

Culture and History

The Maison de la Réserve is housed in the Pavillon de Landes, where it welcomes and informs visitors. It features a permanent exhibition covering an area of 80 square metres. The exhibition presents the history of the Étang-des-Landes area and explains the natural habitats of the reserve.

The Étang des Landes was created when a dyke built in 1684 transformed a marshy area into a pond.

Events and Activities

The reserve’s Nature Rendez-vous events are offered every year and include recreational, night-time and festive activities. The Réserve Naturelle de l’Etang des Landes takes part in recurring national nature and cultural programmes, including Fête de la nature, Nuit de la Chauve-Souris, Fréquence grenouille and the Journées du patrimoine.

Fishing at the Étang des Landes is permitted but subject to regulations. A special permit for the site is required for fishing and is sold at the Maison de la Réserve.

A 7-kilometre guided discovery walk leads through the reserve and presents its history and various habitats; participants can also observe some of the species found there.
