Culture

The first documented mention of the Château de Montesquieu-des-Albères dates back to 1080. The château was built by the lords of Sant Cristau, who later adopted the name Montesquieu.

Saint-Saturnin is a Romanesque church in Montesquieu-des-Albères that has been documented since the 12th century. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Elne in 1123 and has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 3 April 1984. Saint-Saturnin has a nave with three bays and a choir with a semicircular apse.

Landscape

The local paths in Montesquieu-des-Albères pass by springs and fountains. The walking routes offer panoramic views.

Le tour de Montesquieu connects the village with the hamlets of Les Trompettes Hautes and Les Agouillous. The route passes through a varied landscape featuring ruins, mas farmhouses, a viewpoint, the Tech River and a mill.

Trails and activities

The Jardins de Marti Fort can be reached on foot from the village via the rural path “de Montesquieu à la Glaude”. They are located 1 km south of the village and are signposted with yellow PR trail markers. The walk there is an approximately two-hour circular route with an elevation gain of around 48 m. The Jardins de Marti Fort are connected with the water management developed in Montesquieu-des-Albères during the 11th and 12th centuries, through which gardens and pastures were created along the “Route de l’eau”.

The ascent to Le Casot del Soldat takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, involves an elevation gain of 450 m and follows a DFCI track described as easy. Le Casot del Soldat offers far-reaching views of Mas Freixe and Pic Estelle, as well as a picnic table, a fountain and a shelter.

Parc des Anglades is a free multisport facility that is open daily all year round. The Boucle des Albères leads to Place de l’Houm in the higher part of the village; climbing up to the bell tower provides access to a viewpoint there.
